Pre-Conference Tours & Activities

Pre-Conference Tours are optional events and take place Wednesday, February 28th. Tours provide participants to explore Alaska and learn more about the people and the area. Most tours are full-day excursions. Space is limited for each tour.

  • Founded over 100 years ago, Chena Hot Springs is Alaska's most developed hot springs destination. Located a scenic 60 miles from the Westmark, the Springs is world-famous for their legendary healing mineral waters renewable energy project. Found onsite is the Aurora Ice Museum, a year-round geothermal technology wonder. The tour includes a swimming pass (bring your suit and towel). Other activities, including lunch at the Resort restaurant, are available at an additional cost.

Depart at 8:30 a.m. and return to the hotel at 5 p.m.

  • See how farming is done in the Last Frontier with our extreme weather conditions! We will travel to Delta, AK, a scenic 82-mile trip to see an Alaska Range Dairy, a pig and beef farm, Delta Meat and Sausage, a meat processing plant, a Yak and Bison Farm, and a flour mill. A box lunch will be provided

Depart at 7:30 am and return to the hotel about 5 pm.

  • Everyone seems to wonder how we keep horses in Alaska. Here is your chance to hear from our equine owners. We will tour four to five equine facilities and learn from their owners as they share how they care for their equine friends to keep them healthy and happy. Lunch will be on your own at a local favorite, the Cookie Jar. This tour is a very small group (less than 10)

Depart at 9 a.m. and return to the hotel around 4:30 p.m.

  • The University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North is a thriving attraction and a teaching and research facility. It is a must-see for the area. As you tour the museum, you will learn about the different regions of Alaska and the culture and explore art exhibits. Lunch will be on your own at a local favorite before heading to the auto museum. In 1905, the first automobile appeared in Alaska, and one hundred years later, businessman Tim Cerny resolved to showcase the history and magnificence of cars in Fairbanks. After enjoying his dream turned into reality, we'll head to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor Center and browse their exhibits. All museum admissions are included.

Depart at 9:30 am and return to the hotel around 5 pm.

  • Do you want to experience some local favorites and get a little shopping in? Jump the "Party" bus as we shop. We'll visit the Alaska Fur Company, Alaska Bowl Company, Northern Threads, Santa Clause House, Toy Quest, and Yarn Over. There will be ample time to shop, and lunch will be on your own at a local favorite.

Depart at 9:45 a.m. and return to the hotel around 4:00 p.m.

  • Visit The University of Fairbanks Large Animal Research Station (LARS) and learn about their research and education in high-latitude biology, as well as their expertise in maintaining colonies of large animals, coordinating educational opportunities, and conducting community outreach to support the UAF mission.
Enjoy a provided box lunch while we head from LARS to Trail Breaker Kennels, home of the late Susan Butcher, winner of four Iditarods. You will get an up-close tour at the kennel and then take a two-mile dog-sled ride. This tour requires warm gear. If you cannot provide your own, you can rent some from a local company for $30; they will drop it off at the hotel. This tour is a very small group (less than 10).

Departs at 10:30 am and returns to the hotel around 4:00 pm
